All new members need to be "Sponsored" by someone that has been on the hike before. All existing members can trace their connection to our founder, Sierra Sherpa, who first did solo trail magic at Vidette Meadows in 2011 to support his son (Honey Buzz), who was thru hiking that year - a huge snowpack year. If you are an existing member that would like to Sponsor someone new (a Candidate), here is the process:
1) If you are not already a part of the current year Hiker group, that is your first task. Get on the list. Make sure you are confirmed as one of the existing hikers. If you do not intend to hike yourself, then your job is to convince one of the existing hiker-members to "Sponsor" your friend. All new hikers MUST be accompanied, and sponsored by an experienced member.
2) The "Sponsoring Member" must publicly take ownership for ensuring that the Candidate has a safe and enjoyable experience before, during, and after the actual hike.
3) The "Sponsoring Member" must do some homework and publicly "Vouch" for the Candidate - ensure that they have (or will have) the equipment, basic fitness, and a willingness to serve thru hikers - also that they have “Something to Offer” in the way of Music, Money, or some unique skill that helps “To support and delight thru hikers - and have fun ourselves while doing it!” (our Mission).
4) Once Items 2 and 3 are complete (and published to other Leadership members), the Sponsor should “ask” the existing leadership (Members with more than 2 hikes under their belt) to vote. If approved – they're in! Add them to the current year list of hikers (typically on WhatsApp). It will be up to the “Voters” to consider the availability of permits and any gender balance desires in their decision.
